If you have explored the option of working with a business coach, then you have probably found yourself wondering if that coach can actually deliver results in your business.  As a business coach, one of the questions I get asked most often when talking with new people is, “What results do you provide for your client?”  My answer is always that results are dependent on the client.

Of course you want to see results in your business if you are paying for someone to come in and help you grow. But here’s what I want you to understand.  Results are directly related to taking personal responsibility for your actions in your business.

For example…

Let’s say you have two clients who are in a similar business and working in a similar way.   You give advice and action items to Client A.   You also give advice and action items to Client B.

Client A takes your advice and action items and runs with it.  They’ve done everything that you instructed them to do. As a result, they see MASSIVE results in their business.  They are signing new clients and growing.

Client B decides that they don’t really feel like doing that today. It’s not really what they want to do, or they implement it kind of half-assed.   As a result, they DON’T get the same results as Client A.  They are at a standstill in their business and are not signing any new clients.

The results, or lack thereof in the case of Client B, are not reflective of the person that is giving the advice. The same advice was given.  One client took it and ran with it. The other client chose not to do the work.  This is what I mean when I say you have to take personal responsibility for your ACTIONS and RESULTS.

Thinking about hiring a coach…

If you are in the position to hire someone to come in and help you with your business, the one thing that I highly recommend you do is ask that person to speak to their client. Any good coach will absolutely give you a recommendation and referral without question.  Then, what you can do is you can have a conversation with that client.  You can ask for their perspective on what it was like working with that coach and how that coach helped them to succeed in building and growing their business.

But ultimately, the results lie in your lap. If you don’t do the work, there is no magic pill that is going to get you results.  Hiring a coach is not some magic formula. You have to take personal responsibility for those actions you need to do so you can see results.

You also have to remember that results come with time.

There really is no magic secret formula that’s going to give you immediate results. So you have to take responsibility for that as well and be willing to commit to the process and time it takes.  Before you hire somebody, ask yourself, “Am I committed to this process? Am I ready to take personal responsibility for my actions?” Because your actions are what’s going to define your results.
