Story time…my fave
So I told you that this came about because it was something I had to say to myself. I was at that point in my business where things were starting to grow. When that happens, you can fall into this place of comparison. If you’ve read The Big Leap, it’s the upper limit problem. I was having a little mini strategy session with myself in the mirror, looking at all the excuses that I was coming up with. Excuses like:
- I don’t have a big enough audience.
- I don’t have a large enough following.
- People aren’t converting.
- I’m not talking to the right people.
- My messaging isn’t great.
- I’m not really great at writing.
I think you get the point. But bottom line…all these excuses were complete bullshit. That’s why I said to myself, “Michelle, just STOP with your bullshit!”
It’s way too easy to get wrapped up in it.
It’s so easy to just keep coming up with all these excuses about why things aren’t working out. When in reality, what you need to do is think about the things that you aren’t doing that you should be doing to get you the results that you want.
So in my case when I complained that I don’t have a big enough audience, I had to ask myself what I was doing to get it to grow. When I was saying that my message isn’t resonating, I had to ask myself if it was because I only put it out once or because I wasn’t using the right language.
If you suck at writing, then show up on video or a podcast. Stop complaining about things and making excuses and actually find what works for you. Stop letting yourself get wrapped up in this bullshit.
Another quick story…
I was on a prospecting call, and the guy had read my website, and he saw on my website that I had this hashtag #stopwithyourbullshit. He was talking about growth and how COVID had really affected his business. He has a cornhole business. I was trying to explain to him that cornhole is really popular. But he lived in upstate New York where it is cold and cloudy still.
I suggested that he try to expand out into a new area. His answer to me was, “Well, the name of the business is Capital Region Cornhole. So I can’t really expand it outside of the capital region because that wouldn’t make sense.” I called him on his busllhit. I told him that “capital region” didn’t mean anything to anybody, but him, because every state has a capital region.
Call yourself out
These are the little things I want you to catch yourself on. I want you hearing me in your head saying, “Stop with your bullshit” when you come up with these little random excuses. Because 90% of the time, there’s so menial. They’re not even worth discussing.
The second you say it, I want you to say to yourself, “ Okay…what can I do to stop that or what can I do to change that?” Then, you need to immediately TAKE ACTION. It’s like that quick, immediate reminder so you can realize you’re making excuses for yourself. Call yourself out! Have this little conversation in the mirror. Have a conversation with yourself in the shower. Do whatever you need to do and just TAKE ACTION on it.
Find someone who isn’t afraid to call you out.
My husband even told me the other day to stop with my bullshit. Find somebody that can do that for you. Give them permission to call you out on your bullshit. A coach is a great person to call you out on your bullshit. If you need a coach that can do that for you, I’m really good at it. I will be more than happy to be that person to tell you to stop with your bullshit.
If you’ve got a list of excuses, write them down, burn it up, or rip it. Stop with the bullshit excuses. Move on. Take action. Change it. Because that’s what’s going to grow your business. All this other bullshit isn’t.
