There is a difference between visibility and authority, and your growth depends on you knowing that difference. I know that a lot of people talk about getting visible.  But what I want to talk to you about today is getting known as the expert in your industry. That is what is going to make all the difference in your growth. There is a huge difference in being visible and actually gaining authority.  


For 2 years, I was just being visible.

I was posting a lot of motivational, uplifting content and general information about growth strategy. And I heard from so many people that they saw my name everywhere, but they didn’t know what I actually did or how I worked with people. Have you had this happen to you before? If so, that’s just being visible. That’s NOT gaining authority. 

If you’re just being visible that means everybody is seeing your name- which is great. But if nobody knows what you do, or how you can help them, what is the point? In order to gain authority, you have to actively shift your mindset and actions to establish yourself as the authority in your industry.  


How do you make the shift from being visible to gaining authority?

Posting content just to post content and show up doesn’t gain you anything if people don’t know what you do. So you need to create authority! You do this by sharing your clients’ success stories. You have to share where they were when they started working with you and where you helped them to get to in their business.  Transformations are powerful. So share your clients’ transformations.

Another thing you need to do is tell people exactly what you do! I know…it’s a novel concept.  But it’s something that a lot of people struggle with. You can build authority by putting out content that lets your followers know you have been through what they are currently going through and can help them to the other side of their obstacle. You’ve already been there and done that so you’re the expert!

The last thing you can do is share tips and tricks to help your followers.  My podcast is how I share quick tips to my audience.  You can do the same through any platform you’d like. Find the pain points of your ideal clients and give 3-5 quick tips.  This showcases your level of expertise and what you bring to the table. Your growth depends on getting known as the expert. 


There is a right time and place for creating visibility.

I do donut Sunday because when people see doughnuts, I want them to think of my name. It’s a way of letting people get to know me as a person. But you want to make sure that you don’t just get known as somebody who loves donuts either. This is why you have to be able to make the difference between visibility and authority. 

There’s a time for visibility, and there’s a time for creating authority. You have to do both of them together. They are non-negotiable. You need to maintain your visibility and let people get to know you on a little bit of a personal side, too. It’s okay to be uplifting, but you also have to let people know how you can help them and why they should hire you. That is what is going to convert and get you clients. 


What does your content say right now?

If you’re struggling, and you’re not seeing the conversion that you’re looking for, I want you to go back through your content. Are you giving people that level of authority? Or are you just beating around the bush? People can’t read between the lines. There’s too much noise in the online space for that. The people that are getting the conversions are the ones that are being very crystal clear on who they are and what they do and how they can work with you. 

So look at all of the things you’ve been doing in your entire digital marketing space. Is your website and your social content clear? What about your email marketing? Are you having conversations that let people know what you do? All of these things play a role in conversion.

If you’re feeling stuck, and you’re feeling like you’re not getting there to that next level, I really really want you to take a hard look at what you’ve been doing. Are you just being visible or are you creating authority? Find a way to bring in a little bit more authority, and I bet you’ll see more conversions.
