If you are going to be a successful business owner, you can’t just be good at the skill that you bring to the table. You can’t just have a passion. And you can’t just know your shit and be really good at what you do. These things just aren’t enough to be successful in business. You also have to master your business skillset. It’s not enough to be a badass web designer, coach, or copywriter. You also have to be good at making connections, making the sale, having conversations around expectations, having your business in order, knowing your numbers, and overall communication.


An example of not mastering a business skillset.

I was interviewing someone that I wanted to potentially work with. She seemed so amazing and was very knowledgeable about her skill. In fact, I was ready to sign on the dotted line and start working with her.

And then it happened. Little by little, she started to reveal how unorganized her business was. I didn’t get a proposal, contract, or even start date. The longer this continued, to more uneasy I became. I know me. And I know that if she handles her business like this with chaos and lack of organization, it was going to drive me nuts. We were no longer such a great fit.


This is exactly why you need to master a business skillset.

You have to have some level of organization and cannot be chaotic and all over the place. I know you probably don’t enjoy invoicing, doing contracts, and figuring out the tech. But when you are in a stage of growth, it is what is going to make or break you.

The people that you’re doing business with expect this level of skill.  They expect you to have your business shit handled on top of the skill you’re bringing to the table. And you need to master your business skillset.

The beautiful thing about the online space is that you can have a really great skill and you can put yourself out there and start making money at it. And that’s beautiful. But if you don’t know how to manage the back end and understand some of these business foundations, you’re going to end up in one or more of a few of these situations:


Sometimes you need to invest in someone else with a business skillset.

If you continue to neglect the business side of your business, you’re going to start to see a decline in your revenue. It’s going to hinder your growth. This is why I advocate for investing in people that can help you in the areas you’re not strong. They are crucial to your growth! 

But you can’t be an expert at all of them. Nor should you be. You make the most money when you are performing the skill that you have that you’re good at. So if you’re not good at some business skillsets, then you need to outsource them to someone who is. Without investing in the business side of it, you are leaving so much money on the table. 


Bottom line…you have to master a business skillset. 

If you are struggling with the business side of things like the operations, the foundations, the strategic side of the business, and the accounting, there are people out there that can help you. You don’t have to master a business skillset in the sense of having to learn every single thing about it. But if you’re not willing to learn it on your own, then you have to find a way to hire the right people. Because without having someone in your business who possesses a particular set of skills related to running your business, it will be detrimental.
