Facts vs Emotions – A growth mindset requires you to separate the two. No offense to the ladies, but men typically tend to be a little bit better at this because they’re just very factual and data-driven. When it comes to business, you have to look at the facts! Being able to separate facts from emotions is very important to the growth in your mindset. You are a business owner and business owners sometimes have to make really hard decisions based on facts that are presented to them. If you truly want to grow your biz, you cannot continue to just operate in a state of emotion.


An example of separating facts from emotions.

I had a client who wanted to release a client.  But she was having a hard time doing so because the client was her very first client, and she felt really guilty about it. However, the work that she was doing was no longer in alignment with the growth of her business.  

So she kept looking at it from the perspective of liking her as a person, but she was charging her so little. I mean her prices have more than doubled since they began working together. Here’s the thing…facts are facts. Emotions are emotions. You can still like somebody, be friends with them, and have a personal connection with them and still leave a situation that no longer works for you.


In order for her to grow and take on the clients that she wanted, she had to separate facts from emotions. 

She couldn’t possibly take on another client because she was spending so much time with this client. If you can’t even take on a new client because you have this one that’s taking up your time at a lower rate, you might need to look at the facts and separate them from your emotions.


Yes, we get emotionally attached to clients, but you have to start taking the emotions out of it. 

It’s no different when you’re looking into investing in your business. I had another client who told me that she just kept questioning what she was doing.  She said to me, “I value my time. And my time is so limited that I don’t want to waste my time.” My response to her was, “What else do you have to spend your time on?” 

She was brand new to this segment of her business.  So she didn’t have any clients. She was completely pivoting from what she was currently doing. The facts were that she had nothing else to do but market her business. So in this case, there is nothing that is a waste of her time, except if she was scrolling social media, aimlessly. It is a fact that you have to spend your marketing your business in order to grow. 

Being in creation mode taps into your emotions. Yes, there’s an emotional piece to it. We all like doing client work, being on the back end, and being in creative mode. That’s the emotional side of it. But you can’t let your emotions take over.


I recently had to separate the facts from emotions.

I made a decision to go to application only for my one-to-one and put in place a cut-off of when I was going to start taking on one-to-one clients for 2022. There was a huge step in separating facts from emotions. 

The emotional side of me was saying, “But you love coaching. What if somebody comes to you in November, then what are you going to do? How are you going to handle this? Do you like this pressure?” There were literally so many emotions around this decision. The fact of the matter was that in order to grow the Accelerated Business Alliance in the way that I want to, I only have so much time. I can only spread myself so thin. So I had to make that decision. 

When I was looking at giving myself a race through the S-corp, the accountant laid out the facts for me. There were so many emotions around it and whether or not it was the best decision. To be truthful, there were tons of emotions that bubbled up. But she laid out the facts and gave me the information I needed to make an educated decision. 


I’m not saying to have a business that is completely emotionally detached.

When you are put into a situation where you have to make a decision for the growth of your business, you have to be able to separate the facts from emotions. What are the factual responses, and what are the emotional responses? 

I’m not going to lie, the emotional responses tend to take over. They tend to cloud our thoughts and extremely limit our perspective. Having somebody on the outside looking in to help you move through some of these decisions is so crucial. This is why I feel so strongly about my Rapid Fire Coaching. It gives you the ability to have someone on the outside looking in literally in your back pocket. You have to have somebody that can help you pull through and look at what the actual data says.


Put separating facts and emotions into action.

Keep a note on your phone, grab a sheet of paper, or go into your journal and divide your piece of paper in half. Then, I want you to write “FACT” at the top on side of it and “EMOTION” on the other side of it. 

When you’re faced with a tough decision, work through it and ask yourself, “What are the facts? And what are the emotions?” Lay it out and really look at it. By being able to compare the two sides, you have a solid foundation to help you make an educated decision, not an emotional decision. 


Emotional decisions almost always hinder your growth. 

They don’t always help your growth. Unless it’s a decision to trust your gut because you’re seeing red flags. But even with red flags, there are usually some kinds of facts that are pointing to that. So anytime you’re faced with that, I want you to just remember just take a minute to practice this exercise. Take a minute to digest it and reflect on it so that you can come to an educated decision.
