Let’s talk about the common mistakes in sales you make without you even knowing it.
I’ve had this same conversation with clients more times than I can count. They’ll tell me a prospect was super excited, ready to go, and then… nothing. Radio silence. They’ll swear their offer is solid, but no one’s buying. Every time, when we dig into the details, I see the same patterns.
And they’re not big, glaring mistakes. They’re subtle. Tiny. But they’re creating little escape routes your potential clients can take when things feel unclear, overwhelming, or too easy to walk away from.
Maybe you’ve been there too.
That moment when someone asks for a proposal, you spend hours making it perfect, send it off… and then never hear from them again. Or you offer a low-ticket intro session thinking, “They’ll love it and want more,” but they don’t come back. Or maybe you’re trying to be helpful and flexible by offering too many choices, and suddenly they can’t decide at all.
Let’s break this down so you can tighten up the holes and stop losing sales you should be closing.
You’re Giving Away Control With Proposals
Here’s what I see: someone asks to work with you, you’re excited, so you put together a beautifully polished proposal and send it off… without a call, without a walkthrough, just an email with a link.
It feels professional, right? Like, this is what they asked for. But here’s the problem: it creates space. Space to overthink. Space to shop around. Space to do nothing at all.
You lose control of the sales process the second you hit send.
Instead:
- Schedule a call to walk through the proposal. Set the tone. Guide the conversation.
- If they won’t take a call, send a Loom or screen share walking them through every line.
- Don’t just rely on words on a screen. Help them see the value beyond the price tag.
And if you’re only selling one or two standard offers? Skip the proposal altogether. Send the contract and invoice. Done.
Leading With Smaller Offers Can Backfire
You’re offering a power hour or short-term intro thinking it’ll naturally lead to a bigger package later. But what usually happens? You fix it. They feel “good enough” and move on.
I’ve done it myself. I’ve offered 8-week 1:1 coaching expecting a client to roll into FVA after… but they felt complete and took the out.
That’s the risk when you start small: they never see the full transformation.
Instead:
- Lead with your full, signature offer. Paint the whole picture. Show them what’s possible.
- Only bring in the smaller offer as a fallback when there’s a real objection or trust issue.
- If you do start small, make it clear that this is step one, and explain what’s next.
Stop trying to upsell later. Start by selling the real thing upfront.
Where Are You Giving People an Easy Out?
Here’s how to find and fix the subtle mistakes that are quietly sabotaging your sales:
- Sending a proposal without a walkthrough? That’s an out.
- Letting people choose between multiple offers? That’s an out wrapped in decision fatigue.
- Leading with a small offer hoping to upsell later? That’s an out they’re almost guaranteed to take.
You’re the expert. You know what they need. They don’t. So lead.
- Make one clear recommendation. Skip the buffet of options.
- Explain your full transformation and what they’re really getting.
- Only offer alternatives if they truly can’t commit to the full package (and even then, set expectations for what’s missing).
You’re in the Driver’s Seat. Act Like It.
Every part of your sales process needs to reflect your leadership.
You are the one setting the tone, guiding the decision, and closing the gap between what they think they want and what they actually need.
If your conversion rate isn’t where you want it to be, go back and ask:
Where might I be unintentionally giving them a way out?
Because that’s what’s happening. Little places in your process where people are falling through the cracks. Not because they don’t want your help, but because they’re unsure, overwhelmed, or just distracted by life.
Patch the holes. Lead with clarity. And watch your conversions shift.
