Do you ever get that gut feeling like you’re stuck in your business… but you have no idea what to actually do next?
That’s where I’ve been for most of 2025. And when I asked inside the Wise Women Masterminds what people were struggling with, one response stood out to me:
“How do you grow your business when you don’t know what you need next?”
Yes. That. That “I’m stuck, but want to grow” space. That “I know there’s more here, but I can’t quite see it yet” energy. So if you’re in that in-between, stagnant growth phase, let’s talk about it.
Maybe you’ve been here too…
Business is fine. Revenue’s steady. You’ve got clients. You’re busy. But it all feels… stale.
You’ve outgrown something, maybe your offer, systems, or your mindset, and you know you can’t just keep going through the motions. But the clarity on what to do next? That’s the part that’s fuzzy.
If you’ve been losing clients, or feeling like the momentum’s slowed down, or constantly second guessing your next step, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.
You’ve just outgrown your original approach. And you need a new one.
Why This Happens
Most business owners, especially service providers, start out because they’re great at what they do. Design, writing, strategy, coaching… whatever it is, you’re a master of the craft.
But being great at your craft isn’t the same as knowing how to run or scale a business. You grow to a point where the skills that got you started aren’t the same ones that are going to take you further. That’s when stagnation sets in.
You try to go back to what used to work, but it doesn’t work anymore.
You can’t see your own gaps, and because you’re so close to your business, the solutions stay just out of reach.
It’s not a knowledge problem. It’s a clarity and discernment problem.
How do you grow when you don’t know what you need next?
Here are five places to look to uncover what’s actually keeping you stuck in your business:
1. Lead Generation
- Are your leads the right fit for where you want to go?
- Are you still marketing to the version of your ideal client from three years ago?
- Have your offers evolved, but your lead gen hasn’t?
2. Sales & Capacity
- If your conversion rate is high but you’re feeling drained, is it time to raise prices or shift your model?
- Are you attracting a lot of “Yes!” that you don’t actually want?
3. Systems & Scalability
- What would break if your clients doubled tomorrow?
- Are you reinventing the wheel with every new client?
- Is the backend of your business built for where you’re headed or where you’ve been?
4. Your Offer
- Has your audience outgrown your current offer, or have you?
- Is your offer still relevant and aligned with the clients you truly want to serve?
5. CEO Mindset
- Are you still operating like a service provider, or are you making decisions like a CEO?
- What identity shift do you need to make to own the next level of your business?
Here’s the hard truth:
If you’ve never been here before, of course you don’t know what to do next.
And trying to figure it out alone? That’s often the costliest decision you can make.
Because when you’re too close to your business, you can’t see what’s not working. You overthink. You overanalyze. You try a dozen different strategies that used to work in a past season, but won’t work now.
And you end up spinning in the same place, burning time and money without real growth.
If you don’t want to hire help (yet), you’ve got to get radically honest with yourself. Not surface-level honest. The kind of honest that goes seven layers deep and asks:
What am I really avoiding? What feels heavy, and why? What am I pretending not to know?
You’re more ready than you think
If you’re feeling the pull toward what’s next, but you’re stuck in that fuzzy “I don’t know what I need” space, start by asking better questions.
Do a self-audit.
Journal on what would break if things got bigger.
Look at your time, your energy, your bottlenecks.
Get real about whether you actually want to be the CEO, or whether you need support to think like one.
Whatever you do, don’t do it alone. This is where strategy, coaching, and real community can be game-changing. Whether it’s a peer, a biz bestie, or a fractional CEO, you need someone who can ask the deeper questions and help you see what you can’t.
