How many times have you caught yourself saying, “I just can’t get motivated”? Maybe it sounds more like, “I know what I need to do, but I can’t seem to make myself do it.” You sit there, spinning, waiting for that magical motivation to hit you.
Been there. And if you’re nodding your head, you’ve probably been there too.
This episode hit me in real time… because I literally said those words the night before recording. “I just can’t get myself motivated.” But what I realized, and what I want to drive home for you, is that motivation isn’t the prerequisite. It’s the result.
The Truth About “Lack of Motivation”
Let’s just call it what it is: the motivation story is often just a mask.
It’s safer to say, “I’m not motivated” than it is to admit you’re afraid. Afraid of failing. Afraid of succeeding. Afraid of judgment. There’s always something underneath it. And we cling to “lack of motivation” like it’s a character trait, when really, it’s a strategy for staying stuck.
We tell ourselves we’re unmotivated, and boom, the responsibility is gone. No action needed. No risk taken. Just sit in it and scroll TikTok.
That’s the comfort zone. That’s the story that keeps you safe and spinning.
One Small Action. That’s It.
Last Sunday, I had a list of things I wanted to get done before the week started. And I kept saying to my mom and husband, “I just can’t get myself motivated.” Sound familiar?
Then I said, “Let me just do this one thing.” I grabbed my laptop to write my Back Pocket Insights email. That one action turned into two hours of momentum. I knocked out so much stuff, not because I found motivation, but because I moved.
That’s the shift. Motivation comes after movement.
So What’s Really Going On?
This is where it gets uncomfortable. That “stuck” feeling? That spinning? It’s not about needing a better planner or another cup of coffee. It’s fear.
- Fear of failure: “If I don’t try, I can’t fail.”
- Fear of success: “If this actually works, can I keep it up?”
- Fear of judgment: “What will people think if I put this out there?”
These fears sound like stories. “I just can’t get motivated.” “That strategy doesn’t work for me.” “I’ve already tried that.” They keep you where you are, even when someone hands you the solution.
What builds motivation when you feel stuck?
Here are the actual things that move the needle, not surface-level tips, but what really works when you’re deep in the cycle:
- Take one micro-action. Write one email. Send one message. Start the thing for 10 minutes, and if you still hate it, you can stop.
- Stack the win. That small win gives you a dopamine boost. Dopamine creates momentum. And momentum fuels motivation.
- Get clear on what “done” looks like. Vague goals kill energy. Know exactly what you’re trying to achieve and why it matters.
- Find accountability. Whether it’s a mentor, biz bestie, or coach, having someone to check in with breaks the loop.
- Name the fear. Ask yourself: What am I afraid will happen if I take this action? Then act in spite of it.
You’re Not Broken, You’re Just Waiting for Something That’s Not Coming
Motivation isn’t going to knock on your door.
You don’t need to feel ready. You don’t need to wait for a spark. You need movement. You need a system that gets you out of your own head and into action, even if it’s messy, imperfect, or last-minute.
That’s why I’m such a big believer in short, focused plans, like the 60-day action cycles inside my Focused Visionary Framework. You don’t need more time. You need clarity, momentum, and someone to keep you focused on what matters.
So here’s your challenge:
Write down one place where you’re “waiting for motivation.”
Now name the fear behind it.
Take one micro action to contradict that fear, and tell someone you did it.
You don’t need motivation.
You need momentum.
And I promise, once you start, the rest will follow.
