Doubt Doesn’t Always Sound Like “I Can’t”: Here’s How It’s Showing Up in Your Business

Let’s talk about doubt. Not the obvious kind, the sneaky kind. The kind that masks itself as procrastination, endless research, waiting until you “feel ready,” or delaying decisions until everything feels perfect.

You might think you’re being smart. Strategic. Thoughtful.

But what you’re really doing is giving doubt the mic.

I’ve done it too. So let me pull back the curtain and tell you exactly how it’s looked in my own business.

The Room I Told Myself I Didn’t Belong In

There’s a guy named Jake Ballentine. He’s a speaker I’ve followed for years, since before COVID. Big audience. He runs events for speakers, authors, and coaches.

And for five years, I told myself I wasn’t ready to be in his room.

Yeah, I was a coach. But these were big-time speakers. People with speaker reels and keynote gigs. Authors. And I let that doubt sit in the background, quietly telling me: “You don’t belong here.”

So I didn’t engage in his group. I didn’t sign up for his events. I told myself I’d wait.

Until one day, I didn’t.

In November, I saw he was hosting the Speakers Authors Coaches Summit in Orlando. Driving distance. No excuses. I bought the ticket before I could talk myself out of it.

And when I got there? I realized I could have been in that room five years ago. And yeah, I would be further along today if I had.

That’s the cost of doubt.

Doubt Is the Real Culprit Behind Your Overthinking

Imposter syndrome, perfectionism, procrastination, they all trace back to the same thing: doubt.

And we let it show up dressed as “being responsible.”

  • “I just need to do a little more research.”
  • “I want to make sure I get this right.”
  • “What if I make the wrong decision?”

You convince yourself you’re being strategic. But what you’re really doing is protecting yourself from taking the leap.

And it’s paralyzing.

It moves from one thing to the next. You get stuck. You overthink. You stay in the spin cycle because you’re afraid to move forward without confidence.

But here’s the truth: confidence doesn’t come first. Confidence comes from doing.

What decision are you avoiding because doubt is running the show?

Here are some ways to move through it and take action anyway:

  • Use the 5-second rule. Five, four, three, two, one, buy the ticket. Send the email. Post the offer. Don’t give yourself time to talk yourself out of it.
  • Set real deadlines. Give yourself a hard stop. Not “when it feels right,” but “by Friday at noon.”
  • Make one micro decision. Not the whole plan. Just one next step. Pick the name. Publish the article. Send the pitch.
  • Look back at what you’ve already done. You’ve moved through doubt before. Remember it. Use that as proof.
  • Stop making it bigger than it is. Most of what we’re spinning on doesn’t matter as much as we think. You can always pivot.

You Don’t Need to Wait to Be Ready

If you’re sitting here thinking, “But I haven’t done this yet, and I don’t have that yet” I want to tell you this clearly:

You are ready to be in the room.

I’ve heard it a hundred times. “Michelle, I’m not ready for your program yet. I don’t have my offer locked in. I’m still figuring things out.”

And my response is always: then it’s exactly the right time. That’s what the room is for.

You don’t have to prove anything before you get support. The most successful business owners I know felt unqualified at some point. But they didn’t let that stop them. They took the leap, made the move, said yes.

And when you do that, the doubt doesn’t disappear, but it stops controlling the show.

Say Yes Before You Feel Ready

The biggest shifts in my business have come from saying yes before I felt ready. Joining masterminds, attending retreats, launching offers, all of it came with doubt. But I moved anyway.

And now? I’m the one telling you: put yourself in the damn room.

If you’re hearing this and thinking about the Focused Visionary Accelerator or the next retreat, this is your sign. You are ready.

Say yes. Five seconds of belief is all you need.

And if you’re still hesitating, send me a DM or email. I will help you move through it. You don’t have to do it alone.
