How Executive Dysfunction Might Be Wrecking Your Workflow (And What to Do Instead)

Let me just start by saying this: I’m not a certified ADHD coach. I don’t have a diagnosis. But I know myself. I’ve done the research. I’ve done the testing. I’ve read the articles. And I know, without a doubt, that I struggle with executive dysfunction.

I didn’t always have the words for it. But looking back, I can see so clearly now that the Focused Visionary Accelerator came to life because of my own experience trying to work with my brain instead of against it.

I needed a structure. I needed a system. Because left unchecked, my brain moves a million miles a minute and still struggles to get a single thing done.

Maybe you’ve been there too?

You’ve got the vision. You’ve got the ideas. But you can’t seem to move anything forward. You keep telling yourself to “just push through,” but it only leads to burnout, or total shutdown.

This is the real impact of executive dysfunction. And if any part of that sounds familiar, I want you to know: you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.

Why Your Brain Feels Like It’s Short-Circuiting

Here’s what the research says: Executive dysfunction is a range of behavioral symptoms that affect how we regulate emotions, thoughts, and actions.

Some signs of executive dysfunction include:

  • Struggling to plan or organize
  • Difficulty prioritizing or sequencing steps
  • Trouble focusing or regulating emotions
  • Being late, missing deadlines, or losing important items
  • Poor time management or decision fatigue

Do you need a clinical diagnosis to work with this? Nope.

This isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about learning how to work with your brain’s natural rhythms. Because trying to “fix” this or “hustle through it” is exactly what leads to overwhelm.

And I’ll be the first to admit: I’ve lived through the cycles.

Go all-in. Hyperfocus. Burn out. Shut down. Avoid. Repeat.

You Don’t Need a Fix, You Need a System

Here’s the kicker. Most business programs aren’t built for brains like ours. They’re built for people who can naturally break big ideas into small steps. But if that was you, you wouldn’t be stuck, would you?

The hard truth? Trying to follow a one-size-fits-all system will only leave you feeling more behind.

Instead, we have to break it down piece by piece, decision by decision.

I gave this example in the episode: one thing on my to-do list was “Schedule the No Lead Left Behind Bootcamp.” Easy, right?

Not even close.

That one line item triggered all the follow-up questions:

  • Is it free or paid?
  • What’s the price?
  • What dates?
  • Who’s making graphics?
  • Do I need a landing page?
  • Should I run ads?

Before I knew it, I was paralyzed in decision fatigue. And guess what? That bootcamp never got scheduled. Not because I didn’t want to do it, but because my brain couldn’t start.

And that’s what we have to change.

How Do You Build Momentum When You’re Stuck in the Loop?

Here’s how to get out of the cycle and move forward, one real step at a time:

  • Pick one small task and break it all the way down.
Stop writing giant action items like “launch bootcamp.” Instead, break it into micro-steps like “choose dates” or “write email subject line.”
  • Give yourself structure that supports your brain.
Maybe you plan your top 3 tasks the night before. Maybe you only make 3 decisions per day. Whatever works, just stick to it.
  • Batch energy, not just tasks.
If your brain works better in creative sprints or with color-coded whiteboards, lean into that. Make the system yours.
  • Schedule realistic time blocks (and recovery time).
I give myself an hour in the morning for money-making tasks, nothing else. Then I pause, reset, and get back to the rest of the day. Your brain needs those breaks.
  • Ask for support.
This is one of those things you can’t out-hustle. You will need help. Whether it’s a biz bestie, a co-working session, or someone to say “step one is just create the Zoom link,” get the support you need to move.

You’re Not Broken. You’re Just Wired Differently.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a giant to-do list, frozen because you don’t even know where to start, I see you.

Executive dysfunction doesn’t mean you’re lazy. It doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for this.

It means your brain is operating in overdrive, and you need a strategy that works with it.

That’s exactly why I created The Missing Piece framework. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it’s built for this. It gives you clarity, structure, and real accountability that respects how your brain works.

If you’re tired of pushing through, and you’re ready to work through it,with support that actually fits, check out The Missing Piece.

You’ve got this. And you’re a lot closer than you think.
