Here’s the truth: you do not need to make all your income from your coaching or consulting business.
And if the pressure to do that is starting to suck the joy out of what you do? It’s time to diversify.
This conversation around diversifying your income has come up with so many clients lately, and honestly, I’ve been sitting in it too. We’re told we need to scale one business to $250K, $500K, even a million, and if we’re not doing that, we’ve somehow failed. But that’s just not real.
And I’ll be straight with you: I don’t want all my income to come from one place. I want to build my pie, and I want every slice to serve a different part of me.
Your Income Doesn’t Have to Come From Just One Thing
We’ve been brainwashed in the online space to believe we have to scale this one offer, this one business, this one model, and if you’re not pulling $50K months from it, you must be doing it wrong.
But maybe the business you’ve been building isn’t actually aligned with how you want to live.
You can keep the things you love and still go after something else that lights you up.
For me? Coaching is one slice. Strategic management consulting? That’s another.
Corporate contracts? Another.
Evergreen workshops. Journals. A mastermind. They’re all different pieces of the same pie.
And the best part? Not a single one of those slices has to be the whole damn thing.
Why Diversification Gives You Freedom
Having multiple income streams reduces risk. That’s obvious. If one offer tanks during a slow season or the economy shifts, your entire business doesn’t go down with it.
But more than that, it lets you be who you are. Fully. Honestly.
Just because you want to explore something else doesn’t mean your business is failing.
You get to have other passions. You get to pursue them. You get to be strategic with them.
You might want to run workshops. You might want to go after corporate training.
You might want to pick up a consulting gig, launch a journal, host a retreat, or buy an RV and turn it into an Airbnb.
You are not required to pick just one.
How Do You Know If It’s Time to Diversify?
Use these questions to check your alignment:
- Do you feel like your current income stream can’t hit your big revenue goal without burning you out?
If the math doesn’t work without jacking up your prices (and that doesn’t feel good), it’s time to explore another path. - Is there a skillset or industry you miss using?
Maybe you used to work in operations, or design, or teaching. That experience can still serve your business, even if it’s in a different form. - Are you holding back from pursuing something you enjoy because it’s “unrelated”?
Passion matters. And it can be profitable even if it’s not tied to your coaching niche. - Do you have business ideas you’ve sidelined because you felt like you had to “stay focused”?
Strategic focus matters. But so does acknowledging when something’s no longer aligned.
Your Revenue Plan Needs Slices, Not Just a Strategy
You don’t have to build every slice at once. In fact, you shouldn’t. But you should know what the slices are, and how big each one needs to be.
Do the math:
- What is your overall revenue goal?
- What percentage of that will come from coaching? From consulting? From your next idea?
- Which slice needs your attention now to move the needle?
- Which slices can stay on the backburner until later?
You’re not running just one business. You’re building an empire.
You’re Allowed to Want More
Let me be clear: none of this means you’re doing anything wrong. You’re not broken. You’re not failing. You’re not lacking mindset work.
If it doesn’t feel good, that might be why it’s not happening.
Your goals, your income, your joy: they all need to align. And if they don’t? It’s time to diversify.
So go build your pie. Make every slice a reflection of who you are and what you want. Some slices might be evergreen. Some might be strategic consulting. Some might be coffee, or journals, or contracts with corporations you’ve never even imagined working with.
You get to choose. You just need a strategy to get there.
