Remember when clients and leads used to just appear in your inbox?
That stretch during COVID when you could passively show up, barely post, and somehow still land business? Those days are over. And if you’re still holding out hope that leads will just find you while you casually hang out online… consider this your wake-up call.
2026 isn’t playing around. And if you’re serious about growth, you’re going to have to get out there and take action.
What Used to Work Doesn’t Anymore
The economy has shifted. The market is more competitive. Buyer discernment is higher than ever.
You can’t sit back and expect clients to come to you. And no, this isn’t about doing more just for the sake of it. It’s about doing what actually works and doing it with consistency.
First Step: Look at What’s Already Worked
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You don’t need a whole new strategy. You need to go back to what’s already worked and double down.
For me? It’s always been coffee chats.
If I stop booking them, my business slows. But here’s the key: having the chat is only step one. You also have to follow up. Because time flies. You’ll blink, it’ll be June, and you haven’t circled back to someone who was ready to refer you, collaborate, or even work with you.
Set the reminder. Send the message. Keep yourself top of mind.
Referrals Work, But Only If You Work Them
If referrals are strong for you, don’t just wait for them to roll in.
- Can you meet with your best referral partners monthly?
- Are you sending emails to them with updates or quick client stories they can relate to?
- Are you following up when someone says, “I have a client who might need you”?
You can’t speed up someone’s decision-making timeline. But you can keep showing up so when they’re ready, you’re the first person they think of.
How Do You Generate Leads Without Burning Out?
Here’s what it really looks like to be proactive without drowning in the noise:
- Revisit past strategies that actually worked.
Don’t start from scratch. Go back to what grew your business before and do more of it. - Follow up like your business depends on it, because it does.
If someone mentioned a referral or expressed interest, follow up. Don’t assume they’ll come back around. - Choose lead-gen actions that fit your time and energy.
Don’t get sucked into all the chat threads, notifications, or community feeds. Pick one lane and show up intentionally. - If it’s working, do more. If it’s not, cut it.
Track what’s working. Stop saying yes to all the things that don’t move the needle. - Stay visible with a purpose.
Whether it’s speaking, podcast guesting, or sending DMs, pick your platform and commit.
Small List? Cool. Use It Strategically.
If your audience is small, that’s fine. You can still have a wildly successful business. But if you’re going to keep your list tight, your actions need to be sharp:
- Keep your offers fresh.
- Use affiliate partnerships or collabs to stay visible.
- Engage like a real human.
You can’t afford to disappear. And you definitely can’t afford to sit around and wait.
You Want Big Goals? Take Big Action.
This isn’t about being everywhere. It’s about being intentional.
You can build a pipeline. You can land aligned clients. But it’s not going to happen by sitting back and hoping it magically clicks into place. You’re going to have to reach out, follow up, and stay in motion.
Feeling overwhelmed? Start small.
- Pick one person to follow up with.
- Send one invite for a coffee chat.
- Go live with one referral partner.
But whatever you do, do not wait. The people who find their success in 2026 are the ones who take the lead.
