The Two Biggest Mistakes I See Business Owners Make

There are two mistakes I see business owners make over and over again.

And the wild part? They’re complete opposites.

Some people give up too soon. Others hold on for way too long.
And both feel completely logical in the moment.
But both are usually driven by emotion, not fact, and they can quietly kill your momentum.

The “It’s Not Working” Lie You Tell Yourself

Let’s start with the first one: giving up too soon.

This shows up in so many ways. Maybe you promoted something twice and decided it’s a flop. Or you sent a couple emails, didn’t get responses, and said, “This just isn’t landing.”

You feel like you’ve “talked about it all the time,” but the truth is: most people aren’t seeing it.

They’re not reading every email. They’re not watching every post. They’re doing the same thing you’re doing: running their business, staying busy, missing half the stuff in their feed.

So you assume it’s not working. You pull the plug. And you move on to the next thing.

But here’s the question you need to ask before you give up:

Where is the actual data?

Did You Actually Give It a Real Shot?

Ask yourself:

  • How many days did you consistently promote the offer?
  • Did you have actual conversations where someone told you the messaging didn’t land?
  • How many networking events did you attend before deciding they didn’t convert?

You say something “didn’t work”, but did you define what working meant in the first place?

If you didn’t define what success looks like, how do you know it didn’t work?
What were you measuring against? And did you even track it?

This is about getting real with the numbers, not the feelings.

And Then… There’s the Other Side

Let’s flip the script.

Because while some people give up after two posts and a dream, others hold onto things way past their expiration date.

That offer that hasn’t sold in six months, but you keep hoping it will.
That strategy you’ve been tweaking endlessly, but the results haven’t changed.
That CRM that drains your time and money, but you’ve already invested so much, you feel guilty letting go.

It’s the sunk cost trap. The emotional attachment. The belief that more effort will fix something that’s fundamentally misaligned.

But here’s the truth:
More effort doesn’t fix a misaligned strategy.

How Do You Know It’s Time to Let Go?

You need to look at:

  • The data over the long haul (3, 4, even 6 months)
  • Whether you’re tweaking from a place of facts or fear
  • What’s really stopping you from letting it go

Are you holding onto something because it feels comfortable?

Or because it’s actually getting you results?

If you’re honest, are you stuck in a pattern of doing and doing without ever evaluating the outcome?

Because if nothing is moving, you have to ask:
What’s the real reason I’m still holding on?

This Is Where CEO Thinking Comes In

I get it. These decisions are hard. That’s why so many people avoid them.

But here is your shift to make:
Are you making decisions based on facts or feelings?

Before you ditch something, or double down on it, ask yourself:

  • What data do I have?
  • What am I missing?
  • What would a neutral third party say?
  • If I were advising a client, what would I tell them to do?

Sometimes you’re just too close to it. Too attached. That’s why you need a second set of eyes.

Businesses Aren’t Failing, They’re Making Emotional Decisions

Most businesses aren’t failing. I don’t even like that word.
The idea wasn’t even bad.
It’s the decisions that were made too early, or too late.
From emotion, not evidence.

This is where the shift happens. From operator to CEO.

From “what feels good” to “what works.”

If this is landing for you, if you’re thinking “yep, I’ve done both”, that’s the work we do inside The Missing Piece Intensives and the Focused Visionary Accelerator.

It’s the conversation we have all the time inside the program.
