There’s a little tough love coming at you today, because sometimes we need to hear the truth, even when it stings a bit.
If you’re struggling to get clients, let’s get one thing straight: it’s not because you’re not good at what you do. I need you to really hear that. You’re not struggling because you’re unqualified or not talented.
You’re struggling because you’re waiting.
Waiting for someone to refer you.
Waiting for your content to magically convert.
Waiting for someone to remember you exist.
But clients don’t just fall into your lap. Getting clients is your job, and it’s a job that requires you to show up every single day, not just when inspiration strikes.
Waiting to Be Discovered? That’s the Problem
There’s this sneaky mindset that creeps in: “If someone wants to work with me, they know how to find me.”
But no, they don’t.
Even if they love your work, even if they’ve been “thinking about you,” they’re not sitting around waiting to take action. People are busy. Just like you’ve been meaning to book that dentist appointment or call the mechanic but haven’t, your potential clients are thinking but not doing.
Thinking doesn’t equal action.
So when you follow up and they say, “Oh my gosh, I was just thinking about you,” it’s not a coincidence, it’s because you took initiative. That’s the difference.
Most People Quit Too Soon
Here’s where so many give up: the follow-up.
You sent one message six months ago and never heard back? That’s not a no, that’s silence. And silence doesn’t mean someone hates you. It doesn’t mean you’re annoying. It means they’re human, and they’re juggling life.
Follow-up is a long game, and most sales happen between the fifth and twelfth touchpoint. So instead of assuming the worst, just keep the conversation going.
- Comment on their posts
- Drop a helpful DM
- Share something that made you think of them
It’s not pestering, it’s presence.
How do you take daily action without burning out?
Here’s how you stay consistent and strategic without slipping into chaos:
- Track your last five to ten clients. Where did they come from? Who referred them? What action did you take that helped them say yes?
- Start small. One DM a day. One email. One follow-up. Not twenty. Not ten. One. Daily action means consistency, not intensity.
- Stay human. That past client you saw on a Zoom call? A simple “Great to see you!” DM could reopen the door. (It just did for me.)
- Make referrals easy. If you want people to refer you, ask. Create a private referral link. Send a quick reminder: “Hey, if you know anyone who’d love this offer, send them my way.”
- Stop waiting for clients. Ask yourself daily, “What did I do today to move a client closer to a yes?”
You’re the One in Charge of This
Let’s be honest, waiting for referrals is just another way of avoiding responsibility. I’ve done it too. I was in a mastermind once, asking why none of the amazing women I networked with ever referred me. One of them looked me dead in the eye and said, “When’s the last time you asked us to?”
Oof. She was right.
People don’t always think to refer, even when they love you. So make it easy. Remind them. Be clear and direct. And do it with integrity.
This isn’t about pushing people into the wrong offers or burning yourself out with hustle. It’s about daily, intentional action. One message. One follow-up. One connection.
That’s how you build momentum.
Where are you waiting instead of actively going after clients?
This is your journaling prompt for the week. Get honest with yourself. Where are you hoping they’ll remember you, instead of making sure they don’t forget?
